Excerpt from "The Cunningham Family"

John Cunningham had his first "schooling" in a one-room school house, Blue Spring, in the Blue Spring section of Trigg County, Kentucky.  After he was grown, he attended Bethel College, Hopkinsville, Ky., and later studied medicine and took a degree in a medical college in St. Louis, Mo.  He married in Trigg County, Ky., in 1859, and his wife died at child birth, leaving a baby son.

When the Civil Ware broke out in 1861, Dr. John volunteered with ninety other young men from Trigg County - was appointed first lieutenant and with these men marched to Camp Burnett, Montgomery County, Tennessee.  In 1867 he went to Texas and settled near Ravenna where he practiced medicine for many years.  In spite of his active life as a doctor he served in the 13th, 27th, 28th, 33rd, and 34th sessions of the Texas legislature.  He is buried in Texas.

Service record:  This record is from "History of Trigg County" by W. H. Perrin, printed in 1884, "History of Kentucky" by Ed Porter Thompson, printed in 1868 and the Adjutant General's Report of "Kentucky Volunteers" edited by Abner Harris.

John Cunningham, Co. G, 4th Kentucky Regt., 1st Kentucky Brigade.  Elected 1st Lt. Sept. 13, 1861, Trigg County.  Fought at Shiloh, resigned June 6, 1862.

(This resignation was a transfer from the Infantry to the Medical Corps.  This information is from older living members of the Cunningham family and from Dr. John's own family.)

The following is from a newspaper clipping after his death on Feb. 26, 1924, in Ravenna, Texas:

Dr. John Cunningham died suddenly about five o'clock this morning.  When the Ware Between the Sates broke out, he volunteered and served throughout the bloody conflict.  At the battle of Shiloh, he was in command of a company under gen. Albert Sidney Johnston.  He also served as a surgeon in the Confederate army and was stationed at Lookout Mountain.  He was captured by the Federals and kept a prisoner for a time at Camp Chase in Ohio.  He moved to Fannin County, Texas, in 1867.
